Arsenal take huge step to complete £39m transfer amid major update

Arsenal transfer news: The Gunners have identified Ajax defender Jurrien Timber as a top target in defence this summer.

Arsenal are reportedly on the verge of signing Ajax defender Jurrien Timber.

The Gunners were unsuccessful in their first bid to sign the centre-back earlier this week. An offer in the region of £30 million was turned down by Ajax but sporting director Edu Gaspar hasn’t given up.

football.london understands that a bid significantly higher than the previous one would be enough to lure the Dutch international away from Amsterdam. Now, it seems that has been done following reports on Saturday evening.

Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg has confirmed that Arsenal are on the ‘verge’ of completing the signing of Timber and a verbal agreement has been reached between the two sides. The journalist has claimed the agreement is expected to see the north Londoners pay between €40m-€45m (£34.4m-£38.7m) plus bonus payments.

The reports from Germany have been seconded by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who claims Arsenal are the only option for the 22-year-old and an official second proposal is expected to be submitted very soon.

With personal terms agreed between the Dutch international and the club, Timber is getting closer to joining Kai Havertz as Mikel Arteta’s new arrivals this summer.

The Chelsea forward is set to undergo his medical this weekend, football.london understands, and an announcement of the 24-year-old’s arrival could come as soon as next week.
